Hartwig Farm
Galena, Illinois

McGuire Igleski & Associates, Inc
. completed Illinois Historic American Building Survey documentation of the Hartwig farm.

Work included archival research into the history of the ownership of, and farming practices at, the property, the history of farming in Jo Daviess County, and the farming traditions along Highway 20 west of Galena. Research was also conducted on the house and barns to inform the narrative of architectural significance. The documentation included written historical and architectural information, photographic documentation, and sketch plans of the existing house and barns.

The property was in continuous use as a farm from 1870 through 2005. The house, constructed 1846-1850 by the original owner of the property, is a vernacular I-House with rear wing, a traditional rural house form in the United States, and is ornamented in the Greek Revival style. The property was fully developed as a farm during the possession of the Hartwig family, during which time three generations of Hartwigs over a period of 101 years, worked and expanded the farm. The farm during the Hartwig's tenure is emblematic of the agrarian traditions of a family farm in the United States, particularly in the Midwest; and which reflects the continued rural character of Jo Daviess County.
