Supreme Court Building
Springfield, Illinois

Historic Structure Report

McGuire Igleski & Associates, Inc. completed an Historic Structure Report to document the history and significance of the building, physical changes over time, the condition of the exterior envelope, interior features and finishes, and building systems.

Work included an intensive survey and assessment of all individual architectural interior and exterior elements. The report included a description and analysis of existing conditions and recommendations for future restoration and rehabilitation projects including an order-of-magnitude estimate of project costs. Consulting MEP engineers provided analysis of proposed HVAC upgrades. Historic finishes conservators consulted on the conservation of murals in the Supreme Courtroom, and of murals and tapestries in the former Appellate Courtroom.

Designed by architect William Carbys Zimmerman, the building was constructed in 1907-08 as the first permanent home for the Illinois Supreme Court. The building has been in continuous use as the Supreme Court and is eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
