MCGUIRE IGLESKI & ASSOCIATES, INC. conducted an architectural and structural assessment of the Ida B. Wells buildings; National Register Eligibility Assessment of the properties within the redevelopment areas; and design of three Ida B. Wells buildings for potential adaptive reuse within the new Madden/Darrow/Wells Redevelopment Plan. Illinois HABS documentation included: written historical and architectural information, photographic documentation and reproduction of original architectural drawings and historic photographs.
Designed and constructed between 1939 and 1941, the Ida B. Wells Public Housing Complex was the first low-income housing built by the Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) as well as the first low-income housing complex built for African Americans in the city of Chicago.
The Madden/Darrows/Wells Redevelopment area includes a portion of the City of Chicago's Oakland Historic District and the entire Ida B. Wells Public Housing Complex.
